Are you gearing up for spring cleaning? One of the best ways to clean your home and make it smell fresh is to add a hand made sachet to all your closets and drawers! Making a sachet is easy, but what do you use for filling? Below are 5 great spring inspired potpourri recipes perfect for filling those sachets.
Make Your Own Potpourri for Sachets
When you think of spring, what comes to mind? For me, I instantly think of beautiful and fragrant spring flowers. Floral scents are the perfect focus for spring sachets. My favorite scents to use are rose, lavender and chamomile. All my spring sachet potpourri recipes include one of these three flowers.
Use High Quality Ingredients
When creating potpourri, one of the most important aspects is the quality of your ingredients. When using lavender buds, dried rosemary, rose petals and other organic material, it’s important to use the best quality you can find. This will give you the cleanest and the nicest fragrance.
I use essential oils in the all the recipes below. If you decide to use essential oil, be sure to use high quality oils. I buy all my oils from Simply Earth. They offer therapeutic grade essential oils at a great price point. Be sure to practice caution whenever using essential oils.
Each sachet recipe also includes rice. I add rice as a carrier for the essential oils. When massaged, the fragrance from the oil is released. This gives life to the sachet when the organic aspects of the potpourri begin to lose their scent. The rice also serves as a weight to the sachet.
Picking Out a Sachet
Be sure that the sachet you are using is made of linen or cotton fabric. These materials allow for air flow and the scent comes through more easily. Cotton and linen are also natural materials that are better for the environment.
Sachets are easy to sew by hand. If you don’t have the time, or the skill, to sew your own, they are always available for purchase online. You can also find them at most craft stores as well.
How to Make the Potpourri
When mixing each combination use a metal spoon and mix all the ingredients completely. Be sure to allow your nose to be in charge. These spring sachet potpourri recipes are meant to be enjoyed. So be sure to remember that all the combinations above are suggestions. Add as much of each scent as you would like and have fun with it!
The amount needed is an estimate, depending on your desired scent, size of sachet and how full you want each sachet, you may need to add more or less to each recipe.
Lavender Rosemary Potpourri
Lavender and rosemary make great companions. Their smell truly compliments one another, and it delivers an incredibly fresh and uplifting scent.
What You’ll Need:
- 1 cup of white rice
- 1/4 cup lavender buds
- 1/8 cup dried rosemary
- 5 drops of lavender essential oil
- 5 drops of rosemary essential oil
Simply mix all the ingredients in a bowl until thoroughly combined. Fill your sachets with the mixture. Add as much as you feel is necessary for each sachet. The amount needed will depend on the size of the sachet and how full you would like them.
Lemon Lavender Potpourri
One of my favorite drinks during the summer is lavender lemonade. The lemon and lavender combination not only tastes good, but smells good too!
What You’ll Need:
- 1 cup of white rice
- 1/2 cup of lavender buds
- 10 drops of lemon essential oil
- 5 drops of lavender essential oil

Rose Vanilla Potpourri
Rose is such a soft and beautiful scent. It is one of the most expensive essential oils on the market. As such, I suggest using dried rose petals instead. Vanilla is a complimentary scent, also soft and sweet.
What You’ll Need:
- 1 cup of white rice
- 1/2 cup of dried, crushed rose petals
- 10 drops of vanilla essential oil
Rose, Roman Chamomile and Clary Sage Potpourri
Roman chamomile offers a light fragrance that smells similar to apples. Clary sage has a very distinct smell that not everyone enjoys. However, in small doses, it compliments chamomile and promotes relaxation. Rose is added as a soft and lovely addition to the potpourri.
What You’ll Need:
- 1 cup of white rice
- 1/2 cup of dried, crushed rose petals
- 10 drops of roman chamomile essential oil
- 5 drops of clary sage essential oil
Rose, Geranium and Chamomile Potpourri
Rose, geranium and roman chamomile are all florals. These scents are very sweet, but blend well together. They smell just like spring to me, and I really love this combination.
What You’ll Need:
- 1 cup of white rice
- 1/2 cup of dried, crushed rose petals
- 10 drops of chamomile essential oil
- 5 drops of geranium essential oil
Using Your Sachets
